Welcome to the Hou Lab of Neurophysiology and Behavior at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, NY

We study how the brain orchestrates motor and physiological control in natural and innate behaviors, focusing on facial movement.

2026. 05. 01. New Paper Alert! Cheese3D enables sensitive detection and analysis of whole-face movement in mice out in Nature Neuroscience.

How do we move from coarse description of behavior to precise, quantitative readouts of underlying neural and muscular states? We introduce Cheese3D, a biologically grounded framework for reconstructing facial movements with high spatial and temporal resolution. Rather than treating facial motion as a set of independent features, we study how individual “building blocks” that drive it reveal coordinated muscle activity. Manuscript - Code - News feature

2025. 07. 23. New Paper Alert! A generic noninvasive neuromotor interface for human-computer interaction out in Nature.

Proud to have been a contributor to this work from when Helen was a visiting research scientist at CTRL-labs at Reality Labs. Exciting possibilities at the interface of muscle physiology, neural networks, and new EMG technologies. Manuscript - Code - News feature
